How does he DO that?: The Secrets of Drawing a Face

Gallery360 presents John Kascht

No red-carpet stalker has observed celebrities more closely than caricature artist John Kascht. Conan O’Brien, Eminem, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Murray, Jack Nicholson, Barbra Streisand, Mick Jagger, and Donald Trump are just a handful of the famous faces he has scrutinized, deconstructed, and reimagined for our delight. All appear in his video Funny Bones: Anatomy of a Celebrity Caricature, done recently for the National Portrait Gallery’s Gallery360 series.

Fifteen years ago, when I started collecting Kascht’s work for the National Portrait Gallery, we began a series of conversations about how to draw, “getting” a likeness, the nature of celebrity, and the art of caricature. Inevitably, Kascht, with his unusual combination of wicked humor and thoughtful insight, made unique contributions to those challenging subjects, all of which interest the students, teachers, artists, and general public who make up the Portrait Gallery’s diverse audiences. So the idea of a sharing Kascht’s drawing process through a video has been a long-term dream.

Throughout Funny Bones, we have the illusion of peering over the artist’s shoulder as he draws. The videostarts with the seductive sound of charcoal scratching on paper. Using a broad vocabulary of graphic marks in various media, Kascht experiments with lines, squiggles, blotches, tracings, and washes, moving ever closer to his final concept.

“Getting” the likeness is a more particular skill. It is “all about noticing,” he tells us. You realize how little most of us see in our daily interactions with people. Kascht’s scrutiny is relentless. The taut mouth, fidgeting hands, tapping feet, wrinkled face, belly laugh—beautifully filmed here by A. Greg Raymond—all tell him something about a person. No doubt Kascht is right that “you wear your life,” but it takes his keen eye to observe it. Since his subjects are famous, he also studies multiple photographs and available moving footage, adding to his information. By the time he is done, he knows the structure and facets of each face intimately, along with its characteristic expressions, as well as which single feature might force our recognition.

But there are challenges to focusing on the famous, with their agents, handlers, and stylists. With comedian Conan O’Brien as his case study, Kascht explains the difficulty of trying to catch a celebrity’s unguarded moment or figuring out the authentic look disguised by makeup and the public persona. He considers comportment, behavior, and body language; he loves finding pictures of his subjects when they were children. It is a tricky balancing act. The preened and polished version of the star is, after all, what we recognize. Some of that familiar artifice might have to remain. All that digging and observing nonetheless helps capture the essence of the individual, any portraitist’s goal.

Finally, once Kascht understands how to create a likeness, he can move that portrayal into caricature. It isn’t mere exaggeration in his view but an intensification of characteristic attributes. In one sequence, he morphs Abraham Lincoln, Luciano Pavarotti, Barbra Streisand, and Mick Jagger from photographic reality into caricatural magnification of their actual features. He has to really know that likeness before he can start to mess with it. Sometimes he finds that it helps to mimic his subject, compare someone’s hair to soft-serve ice cream, or make a likeness out of cheese doodles. It is all part of learning the face and pushing toward “the life at the center of it all.”

That happened to me when Gorgeous George the great wrestler came to my hometown. In the mid-50s, I was performing in the lobby of the National Guard Armory, the Veterans Memorial Building, the site where all the big shows happened - the livestock shows and hockey games, circuses and boxing shows, traveling preacher revivals, country-and-western jamborees. Once a year or so, Gorgeous George would bring his whole troupe of performers to town: Goliath, The Vampire, The Twister, The Strangler, The Bone Crusher, The Holy Terror, midget wrestlers, a couple of lady wrestlers, and a whole lot more. I was playing on a makeshift platform in the lobby of the building with the usual wild activity of people milling about, and no one was paying much attention. Suddenly the doors burst open and in came Gorgeous George himself. He roared in like the storm, didn't go through the backstage area, he came right through the lobby of the building and he seemed like forty men. It was Gorgeous George, in all his magnificent glory with all the lightning and vitality you'd expect. He had valets and was surrounded by women carrying roses, wore a majestic fur-lined gold cape and his long blond curls were flowing. He brushed by the makeshift stage and glanced towards the sound of the music. He didn't break stride, but he looked at me, eyes flashing with moonshine. He winked and seemed to mouth the phrase 'You're making it come alive.'" - Bob Dylan, Chronicles: Volume One "I am the Greatest Wrestler in the World!" During the peak of his career, Gorgeous George's fame was comparable to that of Muhammad Ali's - whose public persona had more than a little of Gorgeous George in it. During the early part of his career, when he was still known as Cassius Clay, Ali was promoting his latest fight on a Las Vegas radio show. Also appearing was Gorgeous George, who was talking up his own fight and who worked himself into a frenzy describing the hurt he planned for opponent, "If this bum beats me, I’ll crawl down Las Vegas Boulevard on my hands and knees. But it won’t happen. I’ll tear his arm off. For I am the greatest wrestler in the world!" Like the young Dylan, the young Ali was entranced by George's rhetoric, and became even more enthusiastic when he discovered that George regularly sold out wherever he appeared. Taking up George's invitation, Ali went to see his match and, as he later remembered, "I saw 15,000 people coming to see this man get beat, and his talking did it. I said, 'This is a g-o-o-o-d idea!'" Gorgeous George's influence can also be seen in Little Richard, James Brown, and Liberace, as well as nearly every other sports or entertainment figure - such as Elton John - who ever adopted a flamboyant, outrageous style. Gorgeous George was born George Wagner in Seward, Nebraska on March 15, 1915. He began his wrestling career during his teens - often competing at local carnivals, where the prize purse averaged 35 cents. By age 17, George was getting bookings through the area's top promoter. At 5'9' and 215 pounds, Wagner was not all that an imposing a figure, but he developed a reputation as a solid wrestler, and by the late `30s he had legitimately captured two regional titles. He also met his first wife, Betty Hanson, who George subsequently married in an in-ring ceremony. That turned out to be so popular that the couple incorporated the wedding into their tour and would re-enact it in arenas throughout the U.S. Seeing how show biz elements helped draw crowds may have started George thinking about developing a more memorable shtick than simply straight wrestling. At least one report has it that he got the idea for an effeminate, dandy villain wrestler after reading an article about a now-forgotten contemporary who wrestled under the name Lord Patrick Lansdowne, and who would appear at bouts as a British Lord attended by a valet. The Human Orchid Also known as "The Human Orchid," George debuted his new persona in 19 and 41 in Eugene, Oregon, and was instantly slapped with the title "Gorgeous George" by a bemused ring announcer. George rapidly became the villain crowds loved to hate. One of the first wrestlers to use the type of flamboyant entrance now common in pro wrestling matches, George would arrive to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, escorted down a personal red carpet by his ring valet “Jeffries,” who would carry a silver mirror for George to gaze upon as rose petals were strewn at his feet. These entrances often took longer than the actual bout, as George still had to exchange taunts with the crowd, have Jeffries spray the ring and unwilling opponent with disinfectant which George claimed was "Chanel #10." The show would culminate in George's refusal to let the referee inspect him for foreign objects unless he was also doused by Jeffries while George shrieked in horror, "Keep your filthy hands off me!" Eventually the match would begin, and George would brazenly ignore the rules while chanting his motto to the audience: "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat!" It was an outrageous, larger-than-life act, tailor-made for the new medium, television. Gorgeous George would become the biggest drawing card of the wrestling industry, as well as one of its first genuine stars. It's been claimed that Gorgeous George was responsible for selling as many TV sets as Milton Berle, Mr. Television, himself. By the '50s, Gorgeous George was earning over $100,000 a year, making him that decade's highest paid athlete. His most famous match would take place in 1959 before 14,000 fans and millions of television viewers where he would be defeated by longtime rival "Whipper" Billy Watson and would lose his treasured platinum locks to the Whipper's razor. Although he would wrestle for three more years, and in fact, knowing a good crowd-pleaser when he saw one, would lose his hair to an opponent's razor twice more in those three years, age and a tough lifestyle eventually caught up with the Gorgeous One. George retired in 1962, bought into a turkey ranch and opened a cocktail lounge in Van Nuys, California, "Gorgeous George's Ringside Restaurant," where he would entertain customers with card tricks. Although filmed before his retirement, you can see a different side of Gorgeous George in this clip from You Asked For It, as he demonstrates some sleight-of-hand for the audience and host Art Baker. Our Daddy, Gorgeous George Gorgeous George passed away on December 26, 1963 at age 48. Although he had made millions during his wrestling career and for a time was probably the most recognizable entertainer on the planet, Gorgeous George would die broke. He was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California, the final resting place for several other celebrities including Oliver Hardy; Curly Joe from The Three Stooges; and in a coincidental Dreamtime connection, Cliff ("Ukulele Ike") Edwards, the voice of Jiminy Cricket, who also died penniless. Gorgeous George's grave can be found in plot 6657, near the northeast side of the fountain. A plaque reads "Love to Our Daddy Gorgeous George." NEW APARTMENT

I'm so in love with my new apartment, here is a quick glimpse of it! It's a work in progress. I can't wait to move in.

Wearing Madewell Skinny Skinny jeans in white, thrifted Pierre Cardin velvet jacket, vintage western floral shirt, and Laurence Dacade mid-calf boots.

My mom and I went by White Elephant Antiques and Lula B's yesterday to pick up some knick-knacks to fill up my apartment. I also found an amazing dining table at Again & Again!

This is called a tantalus--how cool is that??

Et là en toute logique vous vous demandez « qui est Cécilia Cheung » ? Je vais tenter de vous répondre, en traduisante vaguement ce que je comprends de l’article publié sur Egotastic… Heu. C’est une chanteuse, actrice, et modèle chinoise. Voilà.

Bref, une actrice très connue à Honk Hong surtout, elle a joué dans des dizaines de films mainstream (dont Shaolin Soccer), et PAF, plein de photos complètement coquines, et des seins refaits pas très jolis, hélas. Sinon elle est super cute. Sur « lire la suite » (c’est un peu porno).

Here is another one I bought blind. in a thrift store for battered women, digging through records and checking out chicks (no no no no no give me a god damn break. It was just too horrible of a joke to pass up).
I find this little thing in a tattered cover. Look at the cover and see two guys sitting in a car. Look at the back, two guys are still sitting in a car, and they have kinda long hair, and there is a little state of Louisiana circled below. Label says 1982.

Record is beat to shit. Awe what the hell.

At the very worst it will be a bad spend of a buck. I walk to the counter, lay down my dollar and tell the girl,
“There’s more where that came from …” and slither out the door. I go home and slap this puppy on the turntable. Oh my god! Distorted guitar and stand up bass, no drums and it is a raw, smoking rockabilly tune worthy of Cramps / Hail worship. Second song is a slow one and damn it if this could not be the Gibson Brothers. Look at the label again. 1982. Shit, this predates the Gobs by five or so years.
Flip it over and weirdness crawls out of the groove. i Like the only music that doesn’t play music—

In August 2010, James Gadberry went to the Searcy Police Department and gave Detective Steven Taylor the following statement:

My name is James Gadberry. I am 42 [years] old and live in Searcy, Arkansas. Over the past 5 to 6 years[,] I have been acquainted with a man named Tom Mueller [and] his wife Debra. . . .

The Sunday after Christmas of 2009 (December 27, 2009) Debra Mueller called and asked if I could come to she [and] Tom's house. Debra said she & Tom had been arguing over some disturbing files she had found on a laptop computer that she [and] Tom shared. She also told me she had found similar files on a separate laptop that Tom primarily used.

When I got to their house, there were pieces of laptop broken [and] strewn about the font porch. Debra told me she had smashed this computer after finding the files. She later found similar files on the laptop that she [and] Tom share.

Debra said the files had names such as "12 year old girl, naked, pussy, illegal porn" and other titles which tended to suggest the content of the files could be child pornography.

Debra asked if I knew how to make copies of these files so she would have documentation of the files. I came to Debra's house and copied the file names on to a CD, which I then kept.

To be clear, the CD I copied does NOT contain any visible images-just file names, and the locations on the computer where each filed is stored. We could not access and view each image, as each image required a password to view, and we did not have the password.

The laptop I copied the CD from was similar in appearance to most laptops. It was black [and] silver in color, and did not have any unusual or distinctive features that would make it distinguishable from most other laptops I have seen. I do not recall any more specific information as to make or model of the laptop.

Within a day or so of copying the files, I confronted Tom about the situation. Tom broke down [and] cried. He told me that the "devil had a hold" of him, and that he enjoyed watching child pornography. Tom told me he knew this was a problem and that he was going to get counseling with this problem.

I told Tom that I would hold on to the disc I had copied, under some conditions. I told Tom that he had to get counseling, and that he was to remove himself from situations where he would be alone with young children.

Tom said he had sought help with a counselor at Harding University, and that he also was seeking help from a sexual addiction clinic in Mississippi (he said it was the same clinic Tiger Woods went to).

I do not know for certain if Tom ever got any counseling, but I had no reason to believe that he did not.

I did recently learn that Tom is continuing to put himself in situations where he is around young children (including his [12-year-old] stepdaughter) unsupervised.

In light of this, I felt that the right thing to do was to make the police aware of the situation.

I took the CD I had burned from Debra's laptop and turned it over to Searcy Police Chief Kyle Osborne on 8/12/10.

I also feel that the police should be aware that approximately 3 or 4 months after I made the CD, Debra asked me if she could have the CD back. I asked Debra why she wanted it. She told me that Tom's counselor wanted to see it. I did not believe her, but I told her that if the counselor needed it, to have the counselor call me and I would talk to him about it directly. No counselor ever contacted me about this.

Truthfully, I haven't had much to do with Tom since this all came out. I assume he has replaced his broken laptop, and that Debra still has the laptop I copied the files from.

This is a true statement, given freely and voluntarily by me, and written by Det. Steve Taylor.

Gov't Ex. A.

Taylor prepared an affidavit and application for a search and seizure warrant, authorizing a search of the Mueller residence, including any laptop computers and computer-related equipment located therein and the seizure and subsequent forensic analysis of all such equipment. See Gov't Ex. A. However, on August 23, 2010, the district judge who reviewed Taylor's application issued a search warrant calling for the search and seizure of single "black/silver colored laptop computer, as described in the affidavit." Gov't Ex. B. Taylor's affidavit in support of his application for a search warrant incorporates Gadberry's statement, in which he describes a black and silver laptop, with no other distinguishable features.

On August 23, 2010, Taylor and Searcy Police Detective Brian Wyatt went to the Mueller residence and knocked on the door, which Debra Mueller ("Mueller") answered. During the suppression hearing, Mueller testified that she "kind of told [Taylor and Wyatt] to hold on" while she attended to her dogs, and when she came back, Taylor and Wyatt were standing inside the door. However, Taylor and Wyatt testified that Mueller invited them inside the house. Standing inside the doorway, Taylor and Wyatt informed Mueller that they had a search warrant for a laptop computer, and it is undisputed that Mueller immediately retrieved a black and silver laptop from the front hallway closet and gave it to the detectives.

After Mueller handed over the laptop, Taylor and Wyatt asked her whether Defendant had access to other computers in the house, and she showed them to another black and silver laptop sitting on the kitchen table, which she had been using to conduct a job search. According to Taylor and Wyatt, they asked Mueller if they could take the second computer for examination at the crime lab, and she agreed. Both detectives testified that Taylor read a permission to search form to Mueller, which she signed.

It is undisputed that Debra Mueller signed a form titled "Permission to Search," which states in part, "I willingly give my permission to the above named officer(s) to conduct a complete search of the premises and property, including all buildings and vehicles, both inside and outside of the property located at . . . (2) laptop computers—(1) Toshiba Model. . . . (1) Chembook Model. . . ." Govt's Ex. C. The paragraph immediately above Debra Mueller's signature reads: "This written permission to search without a search warrant is given by me to the above officers voluntarily and without any threats or promises of any kind." Id.

At the hearing, Mueller acknowledged that she permitted Taylor and Wyatt to see the second computer. When asked whether the detectives asked if they could take the computer, Mueller answered: "I don't know if they said it or if I just assumed that they were because they had them all there together, you know, wiring things down off of them. And then they did as for another computer, so." Hr'g Tr. at 59. Mueller further testified that the detectives told her that the document she signed was a receipt, which she did not read and which was not read to her before she signed it. It is undisputed that Wyatt completed a receipt form before he left the Mueller residence, which lists the computers that he and Taylor took from the residence. The form does not contain Mueller's signature. Gov't Ex. D.

A medieval crust, a sloppy splash of sauce, and the sweetest, freshest mozzarella make the pie at this famous pizza shack the best of its coal-oven kind by a wide margin. The occasional pizzaiolo outburst, the casual policy concerning store hours (open until the dough runs out), and the no-frills, airplane-wine-bottle selection only add to the charm. Forget about the Manhattan branches and their foggy affiliations. Every self-respecting pizza-loving New Yorker should visit the Coney Island original at least once in his lifetime.
